The Top Record of the Year: The Artist's Lux Secures the Top Spot.

On the surface, this work may look closer to an arduous academic quiz than a new popular music project from a musician whose previous single featured a global K-pop star. Split into four separate movements and sung in 13 languages, this is a dizzying symphonic album exploring female mystery, religious ascent, and corporal transformation, often by way of the lens of different female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme handled with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched heavenward here, buoyed by the constant sound of a major orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a long roll call of contributors. Its sheer audacity by itself makes the work of other pop stars seem rather modest.

Transcending Scholarly Exercise

That this album manages to escape dry academic posturing feels nothing short of a miracle, with sole praise going to Rosalía. While this is not her first album to alchemize the past with the present, its ambitions feel far higher on Lux, with the balancing act far more precarious. What really raises this fourth release, outside of its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and inherent drama, is a core sense of joy. Similar to the iconic Björk at her height, there is a wondrous quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps you up in its tornado. Even when she's tearing your heart apart, the listener still desire to be right there through the ride.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

This exuberant spirit shines brightly on a stirring piano-led ballad inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over several minutes. Then, everything drops silent, and we hear a spontaneous giggle and a declaration prior to a comically exaggerated string surge thuds in with cartoonish force. The song then shifts into the frenetic track driven by racing strings, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from the artist herself.

"The charm of this album is that you rarely quite understand—or even want to predict—where it is going next."

Almost each track concludes at a totally distinct place than where it began. One moment examines the transient trappings of fame with a featherlight symphony only to disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing her previous rhythmic style starts off dark and brooding, featuring prowling vocals, before fluttering flamenco rhythms and an angelic choir enter to soften the song's rough corners.

The Balance Between Art & Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act of the album involves straddling the gap between radical innovation and broad appeal. This is no surprise that the album has become the artist's first work to break into the upper reaches of major charts: at its core a collection of truly catchy hits. One track performed entirely in English swells on a refrain that seems to gather more and more nagging hooks as it spirals skyward. That feat is repeated by a different expansive track that grows and constricts, intertwining layered tunes like an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song seduces via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it shares with cultural impact of other heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a painted-on edge, like a fairy-tale figure concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a grand scale, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry in an era of looming artificial blankness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that skillfully controls its own inherent excess. This is an abundant well of hidden gems that takes patience to fully explore but doesn't seem like a chore. Where some major releases of the year seemed like feasting on scraps, this record is a sumptuous feast where the guests at the table, some tipsy on sacred wine, flutter between conversations about historical figures, the profound sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common stories about useless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from pop's most restlessly creative visionary.
